We would love more volunteers to help us with our Magic the Gathering Card of the Day reviews. She’s way too slow and low-impact to hack it in Legacy, but if you want to try something unusual, she may well scratch that itch nicely. and while she’s best-suited as the leader of her own shell, I imagine her value abilities are useful in a Grixis (or more colorful) Dragon deck. I think she’s an interesting sort of puzzle to try and solve. This is an interesting enough conceit, and one she actually pulls off acceptably, thanks to being a four-mana Dragon tutor or a way to dissuade small decks from trying to go wide and into her. Sivitri Scarzam has had quite the glow-up, hasn’t she? No longer a forgettable vanilla creature from Legends, she has an interesting set of abilities, trying to be a Dragon commander without actually being in the main Dragon color.
Sivitri is from the tranche of “Legends Reimagined”, so she’s only legal in Eternal formats and won’t show up in Limited. I’d be surprised if she doesn’t see play and cause damage somewhere, and that’s something nobody thought they’d say about a character where 95% of their previous play was in the pauperest of Commander environments.
Using her in a three-color deck seems like a distinct possibility, if you can arrange for redundancy in some of her abilities to compensate for not having her in the command zone. Using her +1 over and over again to bleed out people who want to attack you is not the worst play, but it feels suboptimal if you don’t have a somewhat significant way to take advantage of her other abilities. Despite all the controversy about the attempts to design better creatures beginning from M10, some of which lives on in the arguments about planeswalkers and about how Omnath got through development, it really is dispiriting when the cards you like turn out to be a liability in your deck, and so Sivitri’s new card is a very welcome sight indeed.Īfter Dragons of Tarkir and the various Dungeons and Dragons sets, there might actually be enough blue and black dragons for her to be the commander of a tribal deck even if there aren’t, there are plenty you might just want to play anyway. Actually, the reason I used her there is because I really did have the described conversation with myself when I first saw her original card, and seeing her reinvention for Dominaria United‘s Legends Retold promotion reminded me of that time. You had to figure this was coming after I picked Sivitri to be the indicative vanilla legend in my gameplay-free review of Legends.
