Conclusion: it's not your game version or whatever that's the problem. Spent two days trying literally everything, but the ntdll.dll 0xc0000005 and similar crashes can't be fixed. Whatever you try it all "works" once in a while giving you false hope, maybe once a day you get to play a game or two, if you're patient enough to sit through 20 crashes to desktop. So first I installed the game from here, kept crashing, also dug up some old installations from old HDDs, a different old ISO, tried using various compatibility settings, renderers, exe versions, etc, etc. I've had trouble on windows 10 before with it and couldn't get it to work, but decided to give it one more shot. This game is a rare gem and just pure fun, so it's worth the time to try and set up. How? Using a VM, exact setup described below. Have this running on Windows 10 in 4k 60FPS, no crashes.
